A 36-year-old woman was yesterday remanded to prison by City Magistrate Fabayo Azore after she appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to a charge of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Joy Jacqueline Caines, of 232 Luckhoo Street, Lodge Housing Scheme, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge which read that on April 16 at the aforementioned address, she had in her possession 2.092 kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
According to Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) prosecutor Konyo Sandiford, CANU ranks conducted a raid at the defendant’s home where an empty suitcase with a false wall containing cocaine, along with two small amounts of cocaine, were discovered in her kitchen.
She further stated that a large quantity of cash – over $14.5 million Guyana dollars, a large amount of US dollars and other foreign currencies – was also found at the property.
The prosecutor added that two vehicles – a Toyota Altezza and a Toyota Premio – and five passports, were also found at the premises, and seized.
The court also heard that police found ‘cooked’ cocaine on a stove in the kitchen and they are currently searching for another individual close to the defendant.
The defendant was represented by Attorney-at-Law Adrian Thompson, who in his application to secure bail for his client told the court that there were multiple persons residing at the address and the articles found could have belonged to anyone.
Thompson argued that his client was at her boutique which is located not far from her home, when CANU officers arrived at her premises, and that the cocaine was not found on his client.
The mother of two will make her next court appearance on May 3.
