Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on the Reliance Public Road, Essequibo Coast about 01:30 hrs yesterday. The accident resulted in the death of 22-year-old Ackeem James.
According to investigations, James, a Guyana Power and Light technician and of Lot 3 Golden Fleece, was proceeding south along the Reliance Public Road on motor cycle CH 2307, when he collided with the left side front bumper of motor lorry GKK 9159 which was parked at the side of the road, facing north.
The grieving family of the deceased expressed their disappointment in the manner of which the police handled the situation.
James is the eldest of three children born to Calvin and Lucy James.
According to Calvin James, the police were reluctant to rush to the scene of the accident immediately to help his dying son.
The elder James said that his son was riding along with another friend at the time of the incident, “The friend was riding in front and my son was riding at the back, after he (friend) heard the impact of the collision he turned around to help.”
Calvin James claimed that the friend stopped a car and offered the driver $10,000 to rush his son (Ackeem) to the hospital. However, the driver refused, thus prompting the friend to go in search of help elsewhere.
In his search for assistance he was detained and questioned by police.
According to witnesses on the scene, James bled to death since the police took at least one hour before they arrived on the scene. The father said he was disappointed that the police “took a whole hour” investigating the dead man’s friend, instead of tending to his dying son.
“What hurts me the most is that my son died and no effort was made to save his life, if it was a case in which he was rushed to the hospital and the doctors tried to help it would’ve been different.”
The body is presently at the Suddie Hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination.
