Dominican Republic racquet wielder, Mariano Lockward dominated his Under-18 group at the start the Singles competition of the Caribbean Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall yesterday.
Guyana’s Kyle Edghill, however, gave the visitor food for thought. After beating St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Jamai Williams in straight sets 11-4, 11-9 and 11-5, Edghill overcame Osvaldo Ramos in five sets 11-5, 7-11, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10 to put him on a path to success.
There was further success for the host nation in the Junior Boys’ Singles competition when Nickolus Romain and Elishaba Johnson both concluded the day unbeaten and in top places in their respective groups.
Romain beat Jamaica’s Tyreek Thompson 15-13, 4-11, 12-10 and11-7 and St. Lucia’s Mario St Cyr 13-15, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7; Johnson defeated Cuba’s Carlos Sanchez 11-9, 11-1 and 11-9) and Jamaica’s Ricardo Hall 11-5, 7-11, 11-5 and11-6.
In addition to Mariano Lockward and Kyle Edghill topping their groups in the Junior Boys’ Singles contest, Barbados’ Tyrese Knight and Trinidad and Tobago’s Lu O’Young also came out on top of their groups.
Meanwhile, in the Junior Girls’ Singles competition, Dominican Republic’s Esmerlyn Castro and Cinthia Sanchez secured the top spots in their groups- a situation that also applied to Janae Lewis of Barbados, Jamaica’s Onika Francis and Cuba’s Shelly Machado.
Jamal Nickolas and Niron Bissu both secured first places in their Cadet Boys’ Singles group. Nickolas overcame Suriname’s Chen Reddy 11-6, 11-2 and 11-6 and Aruba’s Robert Dirken 11-6, 11-7 and 11-8); Bissu beat St. Lucia’s D’Andre Calderon 11-4, 11-6 and11-9 and Trinidad and Tobago’s Messiah Walcott (11-4, 12-10, 11-9).
Likewise, in the Cadet Boys’ Singles contest, the Dominican Republic’s Steff Guttierez was first place along with Trinidad and Tobago’s, Uzair Omardeen. It was the same for their colleagues in the Cadet Girls’ Singles competition. Dahyana Rojas, Estefany Rodriguez, Idelsa Baez and Rosa Torres all topped their groups.
The respective finals were set for last night, bringing the curtains down on the 2017 Caribbean Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championships.
