-Buxton Diamond finishes third
A capacity crowd was on hand to witness the final of this year’s East Coast Demerara Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Competition on Easter Monday, at the Haslington Market Tarmac.
By the time the final whistle sounded after midnight, Melanie ‘B’ were crowned new champions after squeezing past Plaisance ‘B’ by a 1-0 margin.
The holiday turnout was arguably the largest to date in the East Coast segment and even though the final failed to live up to past competitions in terms of excitement, fans went away feeling satisfied with the night’s action.
Amoniki Rogers’ 12th minute missile from long range was the only goal to be scored in the game.
Melanie ‘B’ reached the final after securing a 2-0 penalty shootout win against Beterverwagting (BV) ‘B’ after their encounter ended in a goalless draw, while Vincent Thomas’ 34th minute goal was enough for Plaisance ‘B’ to enjoy a 1-0 win over Buxton Diamond in the other semi-final.
In the playoff for third place, Buxton Diamond edged BV ‘B’ 1-0 through a 3rd minute effort from Kevon Assaye.
Melanie ‘B’ for the win walked away with $250,000 and the championship trophy along with the right to represent the East Coast in the national playoffs, while the second, third and fourth placed teams received $150,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
With the completion of this latest zone it now means that the East Coast Demerara, Georgetown, West Demerara/East Bank Demerara and Berbice Zones are finished, while the Linden and Bartica segments are expected to be played shortly.
