Nominates his assistant instead
By Sean Devers
The non-nomination of Guyana Jaguars Head Coach for the NSC Coach of the year is not only
shocking but disrespectful to the 35-year-old Berbician, who for the last three seasons has won the Regional First-Class title as Coach of the Guyana Senior cricket team, which gives Guyana an unprecedented three consecutive Championships with their win yesterday against the Windwards with one match to play.
When asked why was Crandon not nominated? GCB Secretary Anand Sanasie said he did not wish to make a statement ‘on the record’ on the issue but directed this Newspaper to TDO of the GCB Colin Stuart for an explanation since it was Stuart who made the decision to nominate Griffith ahead of Crandon.
“Gentlemen, Guyana Jaguars’ success in the WICB Regional 4 Day PCL within its first three (3) years have largely been made possible through the sterling contributions of Coaches Esuan Crandon and Rayon Griffith- both being able to bring their strengths together for a unified purpose,” Stuart informed.
An explanation was given by the GCB TDO, former West Indies pacer Colin Stuart, for Crandon’s non selection in the list of nominees, when his assistant Rayon Griffith for the same team he Coaches has been nominated but that explanation which was also posted on facebook could create tensions between Crandon and his assistant.
“The nomination of Rayon Griffith for the “NSC Coach of the year” is due to Rayon’s elevation to assistant coach for the West Indies ‘A’ team in 2016 during the India tour of West Indies and West Indies A team tour of Sri Lanka. The nomination was NOT merely based on a specific designation, for example Head Coach or assistant coach, but on factors such as their contributions, performances and elevation in the Guyana and West Indies Coaching Development Chain,” Stuart explained
The facebook explanation was posted on the opening day of the Jaguars’ penultimate game in this season’s Digicel Regional First-Class tournament match against the Volcanoes at Providence with leaders Jaguars almost at the finish line once again.
Crandon confirmed that he read the Facebook comments but declined to comment on the issue just saying, “I think the results of this team speaks for itself and it is the results I am interested in.” As a player, the Rose Hall Town fast bowler and hard hitting left-handed batsman has taken 90 wickets from 38 First-Class matches from 2000 to 2011. He has also played 28 fifty overs games and 18 t20s.
But it is as a Coach that Crandon, a level 3 accredited Coach, stands out. Under him Guyana has had the longest winning streak in its cricketing history; they have not lost a single game in 18 matches since being beaten by two runs chasing 69 to win back in December 2014.
That unbeaten streak was broken by the Leewards Hurricanes in December last year and since then they have not lost a match since then and if it’s that the GCB feels Griffith does more work or is a better Coach than Crandon as Head Coach then there is no need for Crandon in that position.
From what I have seen covering almost every game the Jaguars have played in and outside of Guyana in the last three years, I can confirm that both Crandon and Griffith have done a good job.
And if Griffith is being nominated for his role with the ‘A’ team then, based on their Regional record Crandon should have been selected ahead of his assistant. I suspect if both Coaches were nominated Crandon would have won.
