The Georgetown Cricket Association in collaboration with the Guyana Diabetic Association (GDA) has launched their second annual U-17 T20 tournament under the theme ‘Let’s talk depression and diabetes’ at a simple ceremony held on Saturday at the Demerara Cricket Club.
The competition will commence on Wednesday with eight teams battling on a round robin format in two zones.
Zone A comprises Transport SC, Georgetown Cricket Club, Demerara Cricket Club and Everest, while Zone B includes St. Stanislaus, Malteenoes SC, Gandhi Youth Organisation and GNIC SC. The top two teams from each zone will go through to the final four.
Speaking at the ceremony, president of the Guyana Diabetic Association and Chair- elect North American Association IDF Glynis Alonzo-Beaton said that living with Diabetes is challenging and as such social support is needed. She added that programmes are being put in place to deal with youths affected with Diabetes and that youths can gain maximum benefits from such venture which is often overlooked.
Beaton explained that sports can be used to help managed Diabetes because it promote team work, help device strategy and encourage discipline; she urged the youths to remain disciplined throughout the tournament.
President of the Georgetown Cricket Association Roger Harper said the players enjoyed playing in the tournament in 2016. He stated that the GCA is happy to provide players with the opportunity to showcase their talent at all levels and they are happy to partner with Guyana Diabetic Association and the other stakeholders for the staging of the tournament.
He said that cricket like all other sports give players the opportunity to socialize, builds team work, respect and promotes healthy lifestyles therefore in the interest of promoting the aforementioned, the GCA is happy to play their part to educate the youths on Diabetes.
Chairman of the GCA competitions committee, Shawn Massiah, expressed gratitude to the sponsors and urged the youths to make the most of the opportunity since players such as Sachin Singh, Ashmead Nedd, Alphius Bookie and Colin Barlow who have all represented Guyana, participated in this tournament.
The winning team will take home a trophy and $50,000 and a trophy and $30,000 will go to the runner up. Players will receive prizes for outstanding individual performances, while the most disciplined team will also be rewarded.
Shawana Blaize secretary/manager of the Amalgamated Transport and General Co-operative Credit Untion Ltd (AT & GCCUL) and Sean Abel Smalta brand manager also made brief remarks.
The ministry of Health, Pan American Health Organisation, World Health Organisation, AT&GCCUL and Ansa Mc Al are the other sponsors on board.
