The battle for regional Junior and Cadet Table Tennis honours and qualification for the second Pan American Championships has heightened with the arrival of nine teams to participate in the 2017 Caribbean Junior and Cadet
Table Tennis Championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The nine teams from the region here in Guyana to participate in the prestigious Championships includes Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Cuba, Aruba, St. Vincent, Dominican Republic, St. Lucia along with host Guyana, which will see approximately 135 youth athletes in competition, which is expected to be a showcase of talent and expertise.
The games commence with the early rounds in the teams competition on Friday and continued yesterday with a semi-finals and finals scheduled for sometime last night. The competition will be used as the qualification event for the second Pan American Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championships scheduled for the Argentina in July.
This competition will be used to select the top four teams from the Caribbean, which will join the top four from Central America and the top four teams from South America to qualify for the Pan American event.
The qualification event is a compulsory event; all the top teams from the region have definitely come to battle for their qualification spot. The categories to be contested are: Boys and Girls 18 and under, 15 years and under – Teams, Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Singles, and Girls Teams, Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Singles, in the respective age groups.
The Championships have taken on an added dimension with the presence of the Latin American Table Tennis Union President, Juan Vila, Theordore Mathews, Miguel Delgado the former Latin American President and Chief Executive Officer of Raise Rexford Tables Tennis Equipment manufacturer have all come to witness the Championships.
The Technical Director for the Championships is Bob Roopnarine of Trinidad and Tobago and he will be assisted by ITTF accredited umpires and referees from Guyana Ryan Narine, Warren Hackshaw, Vernon Rodrigues, Bertnell Richards, Dwayne Gibson, Shavin Green , Maurice Cummings, Shaquel John, Candacy McKenzie, Debra Daniels and Leona Kyte.
From the quality of skills exhibited thus far table tennis lovers will be in for a treat. The Cadet and Junior Caribbean Championship is an incubator for regional table tennis talents. Guyana’s Table Tennis Association is proud to be host of this event.
The tournament provides the opportunity for 32 of Guyana’s top cadet and junior table tennis athletes to represent Guyana and compete against the region’s best for regional honours, which has long term benefits for the development of the sport.
According to the GTTA Guyana’s charge will be led in the Under 18 Boys A team of Miguel Wong, Elishaba Johnson, Kyle Edghill and Nickolus Romain with Guyana Boys B team coming from Tyriq Saunders, Vishan Harrynauth, Vishan Deo, Krystian Sahadeo, Dhanesh Persaud and Colin Wong.
Girls 15 years and under Neveah Clarkston, Abigale Martin Selenas Jackman, Thuria Thomas and Girls 18 years and under Priscillia Greaves, Jamaali Homer, Aneka Philips and Davona Best.
Boys 15 years and under where a nucleus of talent abounds will see Jamal Nicholas, Kaysan Ninvalle, Terrence Rausche and Yeudistir Persaud forming Guyana A team and Niron Bissu Isaiah Layne, Brandon Jaikarran and Navindra Persaud forming the B team.
