The Ministry of Education, Department of Culture, Youth and Sport/ National Sports Commission Easter Vacation Swimming Programme commenced yesterday at Colgrain pool and the National Aquatic Centre.
The programme which involves students under the age of 11 got underway with an opening ceremony at Colgrain pool in which Director of Sports Christopher Jones urged the participants to take the sport seriously with the view of representing Guyana in the future. He said that it is from the grassroots level that talent are being spotted and harnessed, while adding that Education plays an integral role in an athlete’s career.
Following the ceremony, students between the ages of 9-11 were taken to the National Aquatic Centre while students between the ages of 6-8 remained at Colgrain. They were being tutored on the basics of swimming including kicks, floating and breathing. The programme continues on a daily basis except on holidays and among the topics carded are hand movements, moving through the water and how to save life. The clinic concludes on April 20.
