-gets support from UK Software firm 1E
Former national middle distance star Waveney Benn returned home recently from the United
Kingdom bearing gifts for local athletes in need of support to enhance their careers.
Benn, who visited Kaieteur Sport Wednesday last told this newspaper that back home in England she is always looking to assist athletes in their development and has repeatedly searched for opportunities to procure whether it is jogging footwear or spikes or even running outfits to donate to athletes when she returns home.
Recently, she solicited the assistance of UK Software firm 1E CEO and founder Sumir Karayi, who consented to donate a large quantity of footwear and other athletic apparel to be distributed to athletes here.
Benn, who has returned to these shores quite often, has always sought to give back to the sport that she loved and still loves and informed Kaieteur Sport that the urge to offer support stemmed from the fact that during her career she too sometimes did not have the adequate footwear and clothing.
“I would search for ways to give back ever since I left Guyana and so every time I return I look for athletes or clubs to share something with,” Benn said.
She added that the ones she loves to help are those who portray the right attitude and commitment because they remind her of her own approach and dedication to the sport.
The lanky former track star who dominated the local scene in the late seventies early eighties thanked the Software firm for its timely support and wished that the relationship grow from strength to strength in the future.
The CEO she said was very supportive of her venture and promised to continue assisting her, especially knowing that it is for a good cause.
Kaieteur Sport extends best wishes to Benn in her ongoing endeavour.
