Alleged Parika wife-killer, Ganesh Dhanraj, narrowly eluded police yesterday at Roden Rust,
East Bank Essequibo, but G Division Commander Leslie James is optimistic that he will be caught..
Police ranks went to the area after receiving information that the 30-year-old Dhanraj was hiding out there. However, just as the ranks were closing in, the suspect escaped by plunging into the Essequibo River. He was seen returning to land.
“We are still on his tracks. We would like to get him because someone lost their life and justice must be served,” Commander James said.
Dhanraj allegedly strangled Dhanwattie Ram, the mother of his three children, with a bed sheet at their Parika Façade, East Bank Essequibo home at around 07:00 hrs on Wednesday.
The 29-old housewife was on her way to the Parika Police Station to make a police report against her reputed husband when he dragged her into their home and strangled her during an argument.
Ram’s body was discovered in a sitting position on a chair in the living room of her one-bedroom home with a mat thrown over her.
The victim’s sister, Latchmie Jailall made the gruesome discovery shortly after the alleged killer was seen fleeing towards the backdam.
The police said that investigations have so far revealed that the victim, after encountering repeated domestic abuse, moved from the suspect’s home four days ago with two of her children and went to her sister’s home which is located a short distance away.
But Dhanraj reportedly went to the sibling’s home on Tuesday and demanded that his reputed wife return home. An altercation reportedly broke out between the couple when she refused to.
Dhanraj then left, but about 06:00hrs on Wednesday, the victim was on her way to the Parika Police Station to lodge a complaint, when he intercepted her and dragged her to their home. Her lifeless body was later found in the house.
Latchmie Jailal, the victim’s sister, related that Dhanwattie has slept at her home, but left early Wednesday to go to the station.
“After some time, a li’l boy run and bring her phone and give me with money to buy credit and he say that (Dhanwattie) say to buy credit and call my father, because Ganesh ain’t leaving her alone,” Latchmie reported.
She said that she immediately left her home and went to where her sister and husband were living and called out for them.
“My sister was crying and she begging to come out, but he not leaving her and they fighting. I tried to go in the house but he pushed me out and locked up the door,” the woman recounted.
She said that she called her father and he informed her to “wait right there until I reach” since he was on his way.
”Because they always fighting up, I left and went home because I had to dress the children for school and by time I go back, I see all the windows lock up and only the door open, so I went in and I didn’t see them,” Latchmie said.
She added that she called her father again to inform him that the couple had left home, but he advised her to check the house properly since they could not have disappeared so fast.
“I went in back and checked. When I was coming out from the room, I see the mat over the chair and when I moved it, I see my sister dead with a sheet around her neck.”
Bagotram Jailall, the victim’s father, said that his daughter lived with the suspect for 12 years and had been abused many times.
“When he ain’t drink, he good, but when he drink, he beats and torments her all the time.”
Jailall said that his daughter was forced to leave home on many occasions as a result of severe abuse.
