General Services romped to their second straight title when they brushed aside Mines in the final of the BOSAI Minerals Group (Guyana) Inc. Inter Department basketball championship last Saturday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court.
Jamal Bethune was awesome in being the scorer with 22 points as his team led at the end of the first quarter 16-11 and at half time, 33-25. The champions tightened their grip and Mines, which had looked like they had a chance after the first half had ended, were out maneuvered in the end, 61-44.
Bethune got excellent support from Domain Webster with 13 points, Marlon Persaud 10 and Alphie Robertson 8 as they ensured that they did not lose their way to record a huge win. Mines’ best effort came from Marvin Russell who notched up 15 points, Carl Isaacs had 9 and former junior national Marlon Pollydore 5 points.
In the third place playoff match, Plant Maintenance proved too strong for Plant Operations engineering a resounding 79-56 win. Maintenance overturned a two point lead (8-10) Operations had by the end of the first quarter and three points (25-28) at the half way mark.
Maintenance outscored Operations which cracked up in the second half, 54-28 to gallop home winners 79-56. In that second half surge Maintenance was led by Monty Niles Jnr., who hit in four 3 pointers to end with 19 points, Mark Louis collected 18, Dave Hopkinson 16 and Anson Durant 10.
The best players for the Operations side were Quincy Datson with the game high 28 points, Myron Prescott 18 and Patrice Ricketts 8. In the female free throw competition, Nickel McIntosh was the winner. The presentation of the top prizes were done by Procurement Superintendent, Jeffrey Wang.
