Jacobs gives MSC exciting last over win over Everest
By Sean Devers
Host Malteenoes squeezed past Everest by five wickets in a last over drama, while the Army ambushed GYO by 69 runs at DCC in latest action in the GCA’s Carib Beer Division One t20 cricket tournament on Saturday.
Several Berbicians turned out for City teams on Saturday and none made a more impacting impression than off-spinner Kevin Ramdeen. He took a wicket off his first over, bowled a dot ball and removed Joseph Perry (1), Darshan Persaud (0) and Pravindralall Persaud (0) in three deliveries in a maiden over that left GYO on 75-5 from a good position of 76-1.
Surendra Heralall (12) and Chris Deonarine, who made 38 with three fours and two sixes, had added 60 for the first wicket in reply to GDF’s 193-8 but the demise of Heralall in the seventh over and the introduction of Ramdeen (4-25) reduced GYO to 124-9 when their overs expired despite 17 from Kishan Singh.
GDF’s imposing total was built around a 125-run second wicket stand between Quincy McPherson, who hammered three fours and six sixes after racing to his 50 from just 31 balls and the left-handed Arthley Bailey who scored 54 with three fours and four sixes after getting to 50 from 37 balls on the small ground.
After Leon Andries (4) was removed by Scott in the first over, Bailey ravaged Mark Hamilton like a dog going after a juicy bone by hitting him for a humongous six before repeating the dose on left-arm spinner Trevon France.
Bailey set DCC on fire with back-to-back boundaries off Scott before McPherson was caught in the deep off a no-ball for height from Hamilton. Bailey pounced on the free-hit and clobbered it for four in an over which cost 17 runs.
McPherson joined the party and smashed Darshan Persaud for six before the pair departed, while Ishwar Singh chipped in with 21 as Kishan Singh (3-45) and pacer Leon Scott (2-25) were the wicket takers.
In a match of fluctuating fortunes on the rough and heavy MSC ground, Skipper Steven Jacobs returned to form with a masterfully crafted undefeated 68 from 37 balls with six sixes and two fours and shared in an important 59-run third wicket partnership with Clinton Pestano who made a 24-ball 34 with a four and three sixes. Nichosie Barker (24) added 39 with Pestano after Kandasammy Surujnarine (4) fell in the first over with four runs on the board.
Their efforts saw MSC to 169-5 to win with one ball to spare in reply to the challenging 167-2 in 20 overs made by the Camp road team.
West Indies opener Rajendra Chandrika also made a welcome return to form with an elegant 52 and put on 90 with Akshaya Persaud who batted from start to finish in an attractive 54-ball unbeaten 72. Chanderpaul Hemraj (20) and Troy Gonsalves (11*) also contributed.
Chandrika was playing with the fluency which had eluded him during Regional matches for Guyana when he was run out but the left-handed Persaud, who hit Pestano for six over cover in an expensive last over from Guyana’s newest First-Class cricketer, was a joy to watch by a packed MSC pavilion which looked like the match was played at the Camp Road venue due to the huge Everest support.
After Surujnarine fell to Troy Gonsalves, in his new role as pacer, Barker was joined by Pestano and the pair played positively with Barker in particular, executing some gorgeous extra cover drives before he was LBW to Hemraj at 58-2.
Pestano at times tried to hit the ball too hard and along with Jacobs, who played an entertaining array of shots, they were especially severe on left-arm spinner Javed Rasheed, carried the score to 117 before Pestano was removed by Persaud.
Marcus Watkins and Orin Ford did not last too long but Jacobs was still there with MSC needing 11 from the last over bowled by Gonsalves.
His first three balls produced two runs and MSC needed nine from three. Jacobs swung hard and he just cleared the boundary but to the astonishment of the MSC supporters, after consulting with his colleague at square leg, Umpire Matthew Kissoon signaled four. After much delay and confusion, six was signaled and Jacobs finished the thrilling contest with a boundary to spark wild celebrations among their fans.
In yesterday’s lone game MSC continued their winning way when they beat GDF by six wickets for their third win in four games to top zone ‘B’.
Cordel Mars (3-16) and Edwin Burnette (3-91) restricted GDF to 113-7, while a brutal unbeaten 20-ball 58 from former National t20 batsman Orin Ford and 24 from Nichosie Barker led MSC to 114-5 in 15 overs as Dennis Legay had 2-14 for GDF.
