Three executives of the Guyana Draughts Association were present last Saturday at the Shaheed’s Boys Orphanage in Alexander Street, Kitty to make presentation of draught boards and pieces to the inmates of that institution. Also present were the female inmates from the Shaheed’s Girls Orphanage in Oleander Gardens E.C.D whom was also presented with boards and pieces. Both of these institutions are owned and administrated by Ms. Raheema Rahaman.
Following a previous meeting between President of the GDA Mr. Jiaram and Ms. Rahaman they decided that draughts would be introduced to these orphanages.
In the opening ceremony Ms. Rahaman welcomed the executives of the Association. She was high in praise for this gesture put to her by Mr. Jiaram. She cautioned the children to preserve whatever would be given to them and make maximum use of it.
Mr. Jiaram in his presentation remarks, urged the children to use their abundant spare time in doing something that could enhance their thinking abilities. He told them that the game can be meaningful to them because once they live up to expectations they would have a chance to tour Suriname since thousands of children play the game in that country. He further said that unfortunate as they are, let draughts be your external friend which can see you interacting with the outer world.
Vice President and coordinator of the Association Mr. Paul D’Anjou spoke about alternative thinking. He envisaged a high level of the game by the children in the near future. Mr. D’Anjou would also be visiting the Orphanages to give updates on the progress and to give advice to the children.
The Association is embarking on a programme of introducing the game among the Disables, Orphanages and Homes for the year 2017. During the GDA Annual General Meeting which was held in January last, the President of the Association told his executives that introducing the game in these areas would create a better past time for these unfortunate individuals and perhaps bring out hidden talents.
A competition is scheduled to be played at the Shaheed’s Boys Orphanage shortly. After the Presentations the Draught executives held a one hour clinic with the children demonstrating basic tactics.
