University of Guyana (UG) defeated Police by four wickets when the Georgetown Cricket Association Carib Beer first division T20 tournament continued yesterday at Eve Leary.
Despite being given a cracking start by opener Alex Algoo, Police could only muster 76-9 after the game was reduced to 10 overs due to rain. Algoo clobbered off spinner Linden Austin for five sixes and a four in the first over which also included a no ball to propel Police to 35 off opening over. But after he departed shortly after for 35, UG managed to restrict Police with some steady bowling.
Spinner Royston Alkins had Sherwin McPherson (03) caught before bowling Ricardo Adams for six leaving the score at 44-3. The rest of the batting struggled with the next best being 10 from Raun Johnson. Keron Sewnarine was the pick of the bowlers with 2-2 from two overs, while Michael Shallim took 2-6, Suresh Dhanai 2-8 and Alkins 2-10.
In reply, UG lost Leon Williams run out for four before Darnel Douglas was taken off Randolph Knights for nine as UG slipped to 23-2. Damien VanTull struck Adams for a six before he was bowled by Adams for 16 while Alkins was caught off Harris leaving UG in trouble at 33-4.
Dhanai kept UG on par with sixes off Adams before he was caught and bowled by the said bowler who also removed Sewnarine for eight as Police fought back. Shallim went without scoring however Ray Newton (12*) and Austin (06*) saw UG home with Austin hitting the first ball off the last over from Johnson for four. UG finished on 77-6 in 9.1 overs; Adams captured 3-26.
The competition continues at 13:30 hrs today with Police hosting DCC and Everest staying at home to GCC. (Zaheer Mohamed)
