Twenty-five members of the Mainstay/ Whyaka community, Essequibo, were recently involved in a training workshop aimed at boosting the economic activity, in response to the rising unemployment and scarcity within the
communities.
Training in this indigenous region was made possible by the Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Ltd (EEPGL) in collaboration with Cerulean Inc.
Cerulean Inc. is a regional and consulting company, registered and headquartered in Guyana. This company collaborates with leading industries to identify growth opportunities for communities.
Mainstay/Whyaka is an indigenous community some four miles inland from Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast, with some 600 inhabitants facing consistent economic pressures. Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Ltd (EEPGL) in collaboration with Cerulean Inc. launched the training workshop entitled “Capacity-Building and Community empowerment”, on March 11, last.
This project responds to the need for increased economic activity within the community, since it facilitates access to affordable vocational and skills training for youths and women. Through economic empowerment women were trained in the need for cottage industries. Youths on the other hand were empowered via sports coaching and mentoring.
The Mainstay/Whyaka community has embarked on several micro socio-economic development projects with the help of the Government in collaboration with the private sector.
The launch was addressed by Toshao, Joel Fredricks; Yvonne Pearson, Member of Parliament and former Toshao of the community; Regional Executive Officer, Rupert Hopkinson, Managing Director of Cerulean Inc., Lyndell Danzie-Black and Carlton James of EEPGL.
Mr. James noted that ExxonMobil is committed to work collaboratively and transparently with local communities to promote positive long term relationships.
He then thanked the Toshao and councilors for their readiness to provide guidance to EEPGL in the relationship.
Apart from this project, the members or the Mainstay/Whyaka community would participate in another workshop entitled ‘Communication and Public Speaking’ from March 31.
