Officials of the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA) were forced to drastically reduce the number of participants, initially selected to represent this country at the Manual Suarez Weightlifting Tournament
scheduled for 20 – 26 March 2017 in Havana Cuba. Consequently, Matthew Assing has been selected to compete in the 69kg class. He left Guyana yesterday, accompanied by Sean Cozier, who acts in the capacity of manager/coach. The selectors had earlier named a five member team following the trials at the Michael Parris Fitness Centre, National Park, early in February. However, due to the lack of funding the Association was forced to reduce its team size.
The Association extends heartfelt gratitude to officials of the Friendship Oxygen Company and the Guyana Olympic Association, for their assistance in making the team’s participation a reality.
