Residents turned out in large numbers on Thursday to join in the revelry celebrating the 47th anniversary of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
There were pre-dawn showers. During the morning there was some persistent drizzle. However, the weather conditions did not prove to be a deterrent, as people ignored the drizzle and turned up at the assembly point all ready for the road march from Hopetown to Rosignol. The threat of rain gradually gave way to ideal conditions for the historic road march, and at the end of it all, the organizers would have patted themselves on the shoulder.
Revelers moved off from Hopetown at midday, tramping to recorded music provided by some of the most popular sound systems in West Berbice, and the mood could not have been mistaken. One could have easily been misled if one had tried assessing the event using the number that started as guide. The crowd just kept getting larger as the happy throng made their way through each village. And, those who did not join the march still would have savored the moments. People could be seen all along the way, taking up vantage points to maximize “camera moments”, and in some cases moving to the rhythm blasting through the air.
The day was dying in the west when the revelers got to Rosignol at approximately six o’clock, but, the energy was fantastic and the atmosphere electric, even after some people had hit the road some six hours earlier.
Everyone converged on the Rosignol Stelling Road and after being feted the revelers took to the tarmac celebration style, making history as it was the first time that there would have been a celebratory road march from Hopetown on the West Coast of Berbice to Rosignol, demonstrating love and unity among the people.
Simultaneously with the march from Hopetown to Rosignol, another group headed to Belladrum, having stared in Hopetown as they have been doing over the years, and converging on the Paradise Playground.
There was also a massive crowd in attendance at the Belladrum end showing appreciation for Mashramani celebrations.
