– released on $50,000 bail
A 35-year-old Welder/Fabricator yesterday appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of assault causing actual bodily harm on his wife.
Mahendra Heeralall appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh and was placed on $50,000 bail. He was also ordered by the Magistrate to stay within 100 feet from the victim identified as Chitralekha Roopan aka “Reshma”, 32, of Number 72 village.
The wife said that she was brutally beaten with an electric cord, an iron bar and a piece of wood in the presence of her husband’s lover of over two years. This happened on Valentine’s Day. Roopan stated that her husband left their Number 72 Village home after an argument ensued between them. She stated that he returned sometime around 21:30 hrs that night.
His lover who lives next door was reportedly waiting at Roopan’s home with gifts for Heeralall when he returned home. Something went wrong and the beating allegedly started. According to the still traumatized woman, she tried to escape the terror meted out to her at the hands of her husband but he followed her.
“Me run and fall down by the bathroom door and he pick up an iron bar and lash me in me head and I feel the blood coming down and then he lash me again”.
According to Roopan, her husband’s lover ventured over to their home to inquire as to what was going on. She stated that Heeralall escaped after abusing her for several hours. He was arrested seven days later and placed before the courts.
Roopan also revealed that the woman would normally sleep at their house on many occasions whilst her husband and the lover would touch each other inappropriately while she watched on. She stated that when she confronted her husband about the disrespect shown to her, the man would physically abuse her “when meh tell he I does get lash for it”.
The lover’s husband is said to be living overseas.
Roopan received twenty-eight stitches to her head and sustained several other injuries about the body. She was treated and sent away.
