Dear Editor,
We write this letter to inform you of a terrible injustice being done. The Ministry of Agriculture (NDIA) gives work to Community Development Councils (CDCs) in their local areas for manual monthly maintenance of Irrigation and Drainage channels at per rod rate. The injustice is that the rates across the board are un-equal and biased. CDCs in the other 9 regions barely get what is being given to the Region 10 CDCs. At $30 a rod (12 feet) for a canal (20ft-60ft wide and 900 rods long) the CDCs in the other 9 Regions are being underpaid tremendously to perform the works. CDCs in Region 10 are paid at a rate excessively beyond the $30. This is for a rod (12 feet) for a drain (3ft – 10ft wide).
The rate at which Linden receives for manual monthly maintenance of drains is the rate at which a machine operator gets paid in the other 9 regions to clean a canal. Are they better? Is the Good Life only for a select few? The CDCs in the whole fall under the Office of National Community Development Councils and receive works from Ministry of Agriculture – NDIA. The parties involved are aware of the unfair rates and do nothing; the rates that other regions’ CDCs receive are not sufficient to do the work needed. A rate of at least $500 per rod for monthly manual maintenance and $1000 per rod for the initial cleaning would be acceptable. Mr. President I am looking forward for rapid action to be taken in response to this letter. We are only a farmers group that didn’t get far in school and became farmers to make a livelihood, but like the ordinary folks, we know what RIGHT is and what WRONG is!
