Marian Academy’s hosted a successful Schools’ Relay Championships on Saturday at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary as part of its Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC) Project for fifth form students.
There were 12 events on the day, which included the 4x100m girls and boys Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18, Girls’ U-14 1200m Medley, Boys’ U-14 1500m Medley, Girls 4x400m, and Boys U-16 and U-18 4x400m races.
There was intermittent rain during the 4x100m races but the team of student organisers overcame and proceeded to finish their programme on time. The event began at around 9:30am, concluding after 4:00pm in much improved weather conditions.
The students of the Physical Education class worked alongside the Competition Director, Jahleel Young, the PE teacher, Keith Smith, Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) officials, Red Cross and Marian Scott Group.
In addition, live streaming was done by the Marian Academy ICT Club. The event attracted huge spectator turnouts, as it formed part of the class project for 2017 CSEC Physical Education Exam that will be held May/June.
Principal of Marian Academy, Sr. Marie Harper O.S.U, officially opened the event, which Henry Rodney performed duties as announcer. National junior sprinter, Daniel Williams was one of the outstanding athletes from Linden’s Mackenzie High School, which won the team title.
Tutorial High School’s Zion Gray was also another outstanding athlete for his school. A total of 17 schools participated. Medals and trophies were presented. The Honorable Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton was also present at the event.
