The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has called cyber crime experts from the police force and has engaged other technical personnel to determine whether its system was deliberately attacked.
According to a notice in Kaieteur News yesterday, the state-owned water company has since made alternative arrangements for billing and collections, starting yesterday.
GWI disclosed that on Thursday, around 07:00hrs, its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) personnel, while performing maintenance duties, discovered that several systems were infected with malware.
“As a result, the necessary precautionary measures were taken and servers were taken offline. GWI has engaged Cyber Crime personnel of the Guyana Police Force and other ICT specialists to assist in the determination of causality and the restoration of the system.”
GWI said it has since made arrangements for alternative solutions in relation to billing and collections effective yesterday.
