University of Guyana (UG) Trojans and Dyna’s Ravens secured opening wins Wednesday night
in the Under-23 category when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) 2017 “League of Champions” bounced off at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
UG Trojans edged Eagles 54-51 with forward, Sherland Gillis putting up a double-double with 14 points and 18 rebounds. He received support from Kadeem Peterkin, who scored 13 points and Denzel Logan with 11 points.
For Eagles, national junior guard, Travis Belgrave poured in 17 points and grabbed 18 rebounds with seven steals, all in vain. Darroll Williams scored 14 points to support Belgrave.
In the other game of the night, Ravens coasted to a 64-55 win over Colts with Murthland Ward and Treson Burnett scoring 18 points each. Ward also had 11 steals and 12 rebounds for a triple-double. Sebastian Luke had 11 points and nine rebounds.
For Colts, guard Jonathan Mangra was the leading scorer with 16 points and eight rebounds with centre Timothy Thompson recording yet another double-double 15 points and 15 rebounds. Jafar Gibbons had 10 points for the team.
