Stella Maris Primary School on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown was the recipient of a quantity of books, crayons and learning charts donated by cricketers Travis Blyden and Steven Jacobs on Tuesday.
Blyden, who made the presentation to acting Graduate Head Mistress (GHM) Sherron Howard, said himself and Jacobs, both former students of the school, thought it necessary to give back to the institution that laid the foundation for them. He credited the teachers for instilling discipline and making them realise the importance of education at a young age.
“We thought it necessary to make this presentation because it is necessary for the children to have firm base which will help them to grow from strength to strength,” he posited.
“We are very thankful to for this opportunity and we will continue to assist in whatever way we can,” he said.
Ms. Howard expressed gratitude to the cricketers and said the items will be used to develop their library and to help in the Phonics programme at the lower level.
Graduate Senior Assistant Mistress (GSAM) Onika Forde said they are happy that the cricketers remembered where they came from and the items will be of tremendous benefit to both the teachers and students. She urged the duo to continue to remain good role models for the students.
Jacobs, who plays for the Malteenoes SC, is currently with the Guyana Jaguars in Barbados competing in the Regional Super 50. Blyden who plays locally for the Guyana Defence Force is also a former member of the MSC. He mainly plies his trade in Trinidad and Tobago and only recently crowned a fine season with Evergreen CC. He left Guyana on Wednesday to fulfill his new contract with the University of the West Indies in the twin island republic as a player/coach. (Zaheer Mohamed).
