Top team Rose Hall Town Jammers Basketball Club began the 2017 season on a high note as
they made light work of defending champions Fyrish Black Sharks when competition began in the annual Anamayah Memorial Basketball Competition on Sunday last in Berbice.
The Jammers were off to a fast start and began eating away at the once ravenous Black Sharks to take an 8-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
During the second quarter, both teams having being warmed up, increased their play, scoring more points in that segment which ended 25-20 in Jammers favour.
The battle continued in the second half of the encounter, but the Jammers were able to thwart any attack mounted by the Black Sharks to maintain the lead at the end of the third quarter at 31-27.
As the fourth quarter began the Jammers began to pull away as they consistently pierced the Black Sharks defence scoring to move onto a 43-35 points win.
Leading the way for the Rose Hall Town Jammers were Wilburn Murray 16, Michael King 9 and Mikel Fung 6 points.
For the Fyrish Black Sharks the top scorers were Linden Joseph 12 and Dessie Douglas 10.
The other teams confirmed in the competition are New Amsterdam Warriors, Smithfield Rockers and Ithaca Hardliners.
The tournament is being played on a round robin basis with the top two teams qualifying for the finals.
At stake in the competition will be cash and other incentives for the winning and runner-up teams and other outstanding players. The tournament is being organised by sport enthusiast Vibert Garnett. The competition is expected to continue on Sunday. (Samuel Whyte)
