A 2001 Government Information Service (GIS) feature article written by then GIS Information Officer, Sheleeza Baksh, and published in the Sunday Chronicle contains information which contradicts the position of the Opposition PPP/C with regard to the hotly debated Red House relocation issue.
The Office of the Prime Minister unearthed this piece of information yesterday.
The lengthy article, under the headline “The legend of Dr. cheddi Jagan lives on at ‘Red House’” was published on July 15, 2001, while now Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo was in the third year of his presidency, the Office of the Prime Minister quoted.
“The third paragraph reads “The location is temporary and some time in the future, a more befitting edifice may be built.”
Further, on page XV the article reads, “Mr. (Dudley) Kissoore said that the centre is managed by a Board of Trustees headed by Mrs. Janet Jagan and Management Board who together decided on the temporary location for the centre…”
Kissoore is an archivist/librarian.
The Office of the President noted that on December 29 last, President David Granger ordered the revocation of the lease for the lands on which Kamana Court, commonly referred to as Red House is situated on High Street in Kingston, Georgetown. The Coalition Government had engaged the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre Inc (CJRCI) since 2015 on the matter of the lease but the negotiations proved futile. President Granger issued the order for CJRCI to vacate within 48 hours, however CJRC moved to the courts seeking an injunction against the removal. The next hearing is scheduled for February 20 next.
The furore resulted in PPP Members of Parliament, led by Jagdeo staging a candlelight vigil outside Red House. The situation became tense after a counter-protest was held by APNU+AFC supporters headed by then Minister of Social Protection Volda Lawrence.
The CJRC has been paying a rent of $1000 per month for the three plots of prime land on which Red House is located and that the state had been footing the bill for the staff and maintenance cost for the facility which is listed as a heritage building, the Office of the Prime Minister noted.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
