Dear Editor,
Notwithstanding which political party is in power in Guyana there must be preservation and maintenance of our heritage so that at all times people of different political dispensation must feel that they have an impartial government. The way the Red House was disposed of in favour of the PPP leaves much to be desired. Legal luminaries speak about the court applying the rule of law in dealing with the matter now that the President has ordered a revocation of the lease. Laymen would want to know if the rule of law was properly applied in its unceremonious acquisition.
This case immediately brings to mind a parcel of land adjacent to the Republic Bank in Anna Regina that was leased to a party loyalist. This land provides ingress and egress to the sea defences. This is an area that experiences breaches and is still constantly threatened. According to engineer estimates an alternative route would cost at least $40 million. Many residents feel that the rule of law used here is an “eye pass” to the community who are always threatened with inundation.
What I find hard to comprehend in this issue is the landlord/tenant argument. The Red House fiasco is one of a totally different character. When a landlord charges rent he ensures that provision is made for his sustenance and for maintenance. To arrive at a figure there is a period of negotiation where there is a give and take. It is hard to conceive of a situation where an immaterial amount is paid for a multimillion state entity where the price paid would cost the landlord to starve to a premature death. What a reprehensible and callous tenant!
The other thing I cannot rationalize is protest and counter protest. While it is expected that the PPP will protest, the coalition must understand that this is done to get them to play into their hands where the main issue will be reflected in partisan politics with a racial dimension. The PPP have been masters of this hypocrisy and the coalition must disassociate itself from it. The President has made a patriotic decision and it must be supported. There is no turning back. Red House belongs to the people of Guyana and not the PPP. That is where it shall remain. The many who claim that Jagan’s Red House is taken away should die in their ignorance.

(Kaieteur News) – There was a time when things were used as they were intended. A fork for eating and a bed for sleeping. (Kaieteur News) – I rarely talk about what comes out of the White House, the Dept. of Justice, and the US, in general.
