Day four rivalry in the STAG Nations Cup knock-out football championship is set for the Tucville ground in the City this evening where three city sides and one from the East Bank will be showcasing their skills.
The opening match at 18:00hrs will see East Bank’s number two side, Herstelling Raiders matching skills with Santos for the third available spot in the quarter finals, the first two having been decided last evening at the #5 ground, West Coast Berbice.
Tonight’s feature match is an all Georgetown affair between Western Tigers and Flamingo which had defeated Mahaicony Thunders in the first match of the tournament, thanks to the best goal of the championship so far which came off the boot of elder statesman, Shem Porter.
Porter will be relishing the chance to lead his side to another win but will know that coming against the Tigers is not easy and they will have to bring their A+ game to the field in order to create a huge upset should they triumph.
Dwayne Ali will be leading Western’s quest to move one step closer to the championship match as all the other teams will be harbouring similar thoughts.
In results from match day 3 which was contested at the Leonora Track and Field Facility on Friday evening last, home team Den Amstel eased to a 4-2 win over East Bank’s Kuru Kururu Warriors, while City side Northern Rangers pummeled West Dem’s Young Achievers, 7-0.
Both Den Amstel and Northern Rangers have eased into the round-of-16 which kicked off last night in Berbice.
Den Amstel were led to the win compliments of double strikes each from Gavin Graham (27, 71) and Kevaughn Ward (31, 72). The Warriors were able to draw level on account of goals from Oliver Denny (44) and Colin Messiah (48) but the home team pulled away again and never looked back.
Northern Rangers were large and in charge from the first whistle against an ordinary looking Young Achievers side which is based in Pouderoyen on the West Bank.
Steven Sankar led the Rangers with a brace (3, 55) whilst there was one apiece for Telfon Daley (23), Devon Caesar (46), Stephon Reynolds (57), Colin Clark (60) and Sunil Logan (83).
The penultimate day of the round-of-16, Wednesday will see teams battling again at the Leonora Track and Field Facility when Pouderoyen (West Dem.) tackle Mahaica Determinators (East Dem.) in the first match at 18:00hrs to be followed by a showdown between Uitvlugt Warriors, the best side in the West side and Northern Rangers.
Final day round-of-16 play will be hosted at the Diamond Community Centre ground, East Bank Demerara when the East Bank’s flagship team, Grove Hi Tech battle Berbice’ New Amsterdam United, the supporting match brings together Ann’s Grove and Den Amstel from 18:00hrs.
