Jaguars 9-0 in reply
By Sean Devers
On a truncated opening day of the fifth and final round in the Digicel Regional
four-day tournament before Christmas between Guyana Jaguars and T&T Red Force, 27 year-old left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, bagged 4-31 after left-arm seamer Raymon Reifer (3-32) and medium pacer Chris Barnwell (2-20) had made early inroads as the Red Force were dismissed for 162 yesterday at Providence.
With lights being used for this format for the first time in Guyana in two years, only 21-year-old Bajan Roshon Primus, who equaled his previous best of 42 that he made against his countrymen, offered resistance on a slow track as no other batsman reached 20.
By the close, the Jaguars, needing to bat 11 overs, were nine without loss after a third shower stopped play with 8.5 overs to be bowled. Rajendra Chandrika (8) and Shemron Hetymer (0) were the not out batsmen.
Overnight rain caused a 70-minute delay and the Red Force elected to bat before the team’s best batsman, Bajan Kyle Hope (15) was bowled by one that straightened and kept low after 48 minutes of play in overcast conditions when the score was 28-1.
Without addition to the score, Imran Khan (7) was caught by Vishaul Singh at forward square trying to work Barnwell off his legs.
With 23-year-old left-hander Isaiah Rajah, in his third game at this level and the more experienced Jason Mohammed at the crease, another heavy shower chased the players off the field nine minutes before Lunch interval and an early Lunch was taken.
After 84 minutes were lost in the afternoon session, play resumed at 13:45hrs, Reifer struck in consecutive deliverers when he induced Mohammed (7) to nick a catch to Bramble and had Skipper Yannic Cariah lbw first ball as the Red Force stumbled to 37-4 to the delight of the three spectators in the stands.
Rajah hit Barnwell for four and along his Captain Yannick Ottley embarked on ‘operation rebuild’ under cloudy skies before Rajah (12) recklessly tried to pull Barnwell on a low track and was bowled to leave the score on 63-4.
Ottley (15) and Primus added 33 for sixth wicket with the latter doing the bulk of the scoring but just when a nice little partnership was building Ottley was removed by Permaul at 96-6.
Steven Katwaroo joined the burly Primus and got going with a neat clip off his pads for four off Permaul before Primus swept Gudakesh Motie to the square leg boundary.
Primus, who batted 65 balls, 71 minutes and reached the boundary seven times, was caught and bowled by Permaul, one of five bowlers with 300 Regional First-Class wickets, on the stroke of Tea at 117-7.
After the break, Katwaroo (24) dumped Motie for a couple of boundaries in the same over before he was trapped lbw by Permaul, who removed Marlon Richards (4) nine runs later at 159-9.
Motie finished off the innings by getting rid of Khary Pierre (17) to give the Jaguars three bowling in addition another point for their pacers taking five wickets.
Play will start at 09:00hrs today to make up for time lost yesterday.
