Adriana Onoja, a travel consultant, accused of swindling a customer of over $500,000 was yesterday released on bail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, when she appeared in court to answer to a fraud charge.
It is alleged that between October 10 and November 1, at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, Onoja obtained $630,000 from Okooko Konoke, by falsely pretending that she was in the position to get him a two-way plane ticket from Lagos, Nigeria to Georgetown, Guyana, knowing same to be false.
Onoja, 27, of Lot 290 Section A Block X Diamond, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to her in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The court heard that the defendant is a travel consultant at Delight Travel Service, North Road, Georgetown. It was revealed that the defendant is known to the virtual complainant (VC) and went to her on October 10, to purchase the ticket for his brother who wanted to travel to Guyana.
According to the prosecutor, the VC went to the defendant to purchase a return ticket after his brother was denied boarding a flight in Nigeria.
However, Onoja told the court that the VC did not pay for a return ticket so she issued an open return ticket for him. The defendant related that when she contacted the relevant authorities in Nigeria she was told that there were issues with Konoke brother¡¯s passport and not the ticket.
Police Prosecutor Simone Payne did not oppose to bail. The Chief Magistrate set bail at $75,000 for the defendant and instructed her to return to court on January 16. Onoja was also instructed to report to the Golden Grove Police Station every Friday until the determination of the matter.
