Teams face off at Providence from Today
By Sean Devers
These two teams have faced each other 52 times including in the first ever WICB Day/Night First-Class match with the pink ball in Antigua in 2010. Guyana won 11 times, lost 12, drew 29 with the other one being abandoned.
Today from 09:30hrs they will battle for supremacy at Providence in the fifth and final round of the Digicel Regional Four-Day tournament for the year with the Guyana Jaguars .8 of a point ahead of Barbados and 2.8 points behind leaders Jamaica.
While leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo is the only Guyanese West Indies player unavailable, T&T, who won the last of their five Regional First-Class titles 11 years ago, is a depleted side without any of their West Indian stars.
The last time they opposed Guyana Vishaul Singh scored a brilliant 104 to spearhead the South American Franchise to a commanding 105-run win last February and the two-times defending Champions and holders of nine titles, will be keen to capitalize on the inexperienced Red Force unit.
The Jaguars will want to end the year with two wins and stay ahead of Barbados after rain in their last two games in St Lucia and Guyana, plus inconsistent cricket robbed them of valuable points.
The adverse weather could again have a say in this encounter since this is supposed to be in the middle of rainy season. However, it will not be surprising if there are four days of brilliant sunshine due to changing weather patterns caused by Global warming.
Only 42-year-old former West Indies Captain Shiv Chanderpaul has managed a century this season for Guyana. But Chanderpaul, only behind Brian Lara in Test runs for the West Indies, suffered a couple of failures in the last match against Barbados after making eight in St Lucia. He will be determined to show his distracters he is still an asset to the Guyana team.
Chanderpaul is three centuries away from joining Devon Smith (21) as the leading centurion in Regional Cricket but like Chanderpaul, Smith is not done yet.
Everyone from one to seven in the Guyana batting order has reached 50 but only Chanderpaul was able to convert his third half-century of the season into three-figures when the Jaguars reached their only 300 first innings total against Barbados.
Teenager Shemron Hetymer has batted with aggression and confidence, if at times not much common sense. Hetmyer turns 20 on Boxing Day and made 47 against Jamaica and 53 against the Leewards when they suffered their only loss this season and first in 19 matches and two years. The West Indies U-19 Skipper got two entertaining fifties in the last round, but due to his at times irresponsible shot selection, has not managed to add to his single First-Class ton.
Guyana has arguable the strongest batting line-up in the tournament and if Rajendra Chandrika, Hetymer, Leon Johnson, Singh, Chanderpaul, Raymon Reifer and Anthony Bramble gets going on what should be a slow track the Red Force could be chasing leather all day.
Left-arm spinners Veerasammy Permaul and Gudakesh Motie, who should be among the wickets on a track that will assist spin, are also very capable with the bat, which adds depth to the Jaguars’ batting.
Chris Barnwell has been consistently inconsistent and his 61 in St. Kitts has been his only score of note but he could keep his place as a back-up seamer to Keon Joseph and Reifer, who have both bowled impressively this season with the new ball.
But there is the option lengthening the batting by playing Tagenarine Chanderpaul, the leading run scorer in GCB three-day League or including off-spinner Eon Hooper, the leading wicket-taker in the League for his second game at this level.
The visitors will be without the Bravo brothers, Lendl Simmons, Keron Pollard, Shannon Gabriel, Denish Ramdin, Sunil Narine, Nicolas Pooran and Jeremy Solozano for various reasons and their batting will hinge on Bajan Kyle Hope, described by his Coach former West Indies batsman ‘Gus’ Logie, as the team’s most consistent and best batsman.
Kyle will need support from Jason Mohamed, Yannic Cariah, Steven Katwaroo, Imran Khan and Skipper Yannick Ottley.
West Indies U-19 batsman Jyd Goolie, who passed up a scholarship last month to attend the Darren Lehmann Academy in Australia, when he was selected for the Red Force, will be someone to watch while 23 year-old Isaiah Rajah has already scored a fifty in his two First-Class matches.
The Red Force bowling attack seems potent with Marlon Richards and Jamaica left-arm pacer Sheldon Cottrell likely to share to new ball with back-up from 21-year-old ‘new kid on the block’ Bajan Roshon Primus.
Leg-spinner Khan is experienced and along with the wily Jon-Russ Jagessar and Mohamed could do the bulk of the spinning for the visitors. Rockie left-arm spinner, Khary Pierre is another spin option.
Teams: Jaguars: Rajendra Chandrika, Taignarine Chanderpaul, Shemron Hetymer, Leon Johnson (Capt), Vishaul Singh, Shiv Chanderpaul, Raymon Reifer, Anthony Bramble, Veerasammy Permaul, Gudakesh Motie, Keon Joseph, Eon Hooper, Chris Barnwell.
Red Force: Kyle Hope, Isaiah Rajah, Yannic Cariah, Yannick Ottley (Capt), Steven Katwaroo, Roshon Primus, Sheldon Cottrell, Marlon Richards, Imran Khan, Jyd Goolie, Khary Pierre, Jon-Russ Jaggasar.
