Last Friday, the University of Guyana held its Sports Awards Ceremony to recognize students who performed outstandingly both as individuals and members of teams throughout the year.
The glitzy event which was held in the Education Lecture Theatre at the University Campus, Turkeyen saw a number of high ranking officials attached to the institution in attendance including Head of the Sports Department Lavern Fraser, Registrar Dr. Nigel Gravesande and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr. Scott, who is currently acting as Chancellor among others.
Among the headliners who were recognized for their exemplary contributions were Emanuel Archibald and Owen Adonis, both of whom are presently on scholarships at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus in Jamaica.
Archibald and Adonis had participated in the UWI Invitational Games and were offered scholarships due to their outstanding performances.
Their attendance was made possible through the intervention of the National Sports Commission that offered to offset all expenses.
Other notable awardees were Keyron Moses, Amias Benjamin and Bobby David players on the Futsal team that finished a creditable third at the Organisation of Universities of Central America & the Caribbean, Keisha Fraser for her cricketing exploits and distance runner Cleveland Forde.
Forde, who delivered the keynote address, spoke of his own rise to stardom in athletics, disclosing that it all started by running errands or delivering messages in his hometown in Port Kaituma.
The middle distance star athlete in his lengthy presentation spoke of his time at the institution, offering advice to students on how they could balance their academic pursuit and participation in sports, while also sharing guidance to administrators and other stakeholders of sport.
He said, “I’ve always ran from presenting in class, but considering, as an athlete, I think that’s enough running already. Now that I have graduated, I have crossed another finish line, I figured why not step up to this podium. Though there are no medals to receive at this time I see this as a rewarding experience to lend my wisdom just as the many coaches, mentors and athletes who have impacted my life.
Everything needs to be done in moderation, not too much of anything or too little of the other but always striking a balance. However, finding that equilibrium is often quite difficult but if we posses tenaciousness and remain focus then success will be attained. Therefore, work hard! And also smartly and patiently, but not too relaxed at the said time.
Further, we must love what we do and do it with a pleasant attitude. Of course, life as a student athlete is hectic, the challenges are numerous and you will encounter the need to sacrifice many of life’s comfort such as your required 7-8 hours sleep, your social life and even time spent with family, but we must come back to proportionality and the most important aspect here is simply the effective and appropriate management of time. We set our over-all goals and plan each day step by step to accomplish our objectives. We may not have all the necessary resources, but must be efficient with what’s at hand to do what has to be done.
Equally important, at the administrative level we need to see more collaborative efforts and togetherness in planning and execution of decisions; likewise, the inclusiveness of all other stakeholders involved. In so doing we are likely to move closer to achieving commonly set goals, thereby, better results, which in turn will be best not only for sports in Guyana, but society as a whole.
In closing, I say we must be slow to speak; think before we act now to improve facilities, technical knowledge and opportunities for sports”.
