Omkar Persaud, the two-year-old child who needed financial support to travel to Cuba to undergo
urgent treatment in his right eye will leave Guyana soon. The ensuing surgery will prevent him from going blind.
Persaud has received the financial support he needed to pay for the treatment, thanks to donations received from the public.
He is diagnosed with retinoblastoma in the right eye. His left eye has already been removed following infection with the same disease.
Retinoblastoma is a rare malignant tumour of the retina, affecting young children.
The toddler needs urgent treatment which includes intra ocular and systemic chemotherapy and local cryotherapy.
Since the treatment is not available in Guyana, a local hospital referred him to a tertiary eye care plus cancer centre in that country for the specialized treatment, as he is on a high risk of not only losing the right eye and becoming blind but also having an intracranial spread.
The treatment will cost $4M. The government assisted the family with one million dollars; the family has managed to arrange a million dollars and the public contributed two million dollars toward the child’s treatment.
Keimchand Persaud, the child’s father, said that his son was born with the disease in his left eye but doctors had informed him to wait until he grew a little before they operated on him.
As such, the two-year-old underwent surgery to remove the eye two months ago but it was during his surgery that medical practitioners noticed that the cancer had spread to the other eye.
