Cabinet has given its no objection for Kester Da Costa to replace Leslie Romalho on the board of
directors for the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL).
This was revealed to the media on Thursday by Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman, at the post-Cabinet media briefing at the Ministry of the Presidency.
Minister Trotman explained that earlier in the year, Cabinet approved a board of directors for GPL with its chairman being businessman, Robert Badal. The other members were Denise Simmons, Leslie Ramalho, Abiola Wong-Innis, Morsha Johnson-Francis, Tara Singh, and Dr. Mahender Sharma.
Trotman said that Romalho, the Managing Director of Noble House Seafoods, has requested to be relieved of his position given the challenges and responsibilities at the seafood company.
His responsibilities cover both Guyana and Suriname, Minister Trotman explained.
“As a result, Cabinet considered that there is no objection to Kester Da Costa becoming a member of the board and to replace Romalho.”
From Akawini Mission, Pomeroon, Da Costa is said to have significant experience in the experience in the accounting field.
Other members of the GPL board are representatives from the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU), and the Private Sector Commission (PSC). The Parliamentary Opposition PPP/C is yet to name a representative.
GPL, the state-owned electricity company, reportedly has over 170,000 customers and is charged with providing electricity to citizens.
It has been under pressure to improve losses from theft and technical issues and which accounts for almost 30 percent of what the company has been producing.
Government has been paying a close eye to the entity amidst growing pressure to improve the fortunes of the company.
