Dear Editor,
Two teenage girls aged 13 and 18 years old who reside at Henry Street, Werk-en-Rust, have been partly abandoned by their ‘Christian’ mother. Editor, what is most ironic, if not pathetic is the sight of both individuals, liming at nights after 21:00 hrs on a bridge of a resident, with the wrong crowd. WE must note that teenage pregnancy is on the rise, resulting in most instances of single parentage. The younger of the two sisters, was recently on the receiving end of a verbal attack from a female school dropout. It was most sickening to hear the child being referred to as a “whore”.
How can a caring and concerned mother allow her daughter to be exposed to such? Ironically, the youngster was nevertheless in the company of the abuser a few nights later. The latter’s mother was the only individual to the best of my knowledge, who had adverse comments to say about the 13-year-old’s father, when an employee of the Ministry of Social Protection visited residents for an opinion of the father.
Operating under the guise of a live-in caregiver, for the elderly, the 13-year-old’s mother was embroiled in a legal matter last year with the child’s father, resulting in the Magistrate’s Court granting a prohibition order against him. This was compounded by the fact that the Child Protection Agency and the Ministry of Social Protection were represented in the matter, with a high level of unprofessionalism in their deliberation.
At this juncture, the child’s welfare and upbringing is sadly lacking from the absent mother. What is the role now of the CPA and the Ministry, given the fact that the father, unlike the mother was more efficient with the child’s attendance, punctuality and basic education at school? Can infrequent visits by the mother, who from all indications is not academically inclined, provide the relevant tuition like the father, suffice, or an uncle? It is my sincere desire as a concerned resident that the vibrant Red Thread Organization and Men With Purpose intervene to save the two teenage sisters from the antisocial ills that are prevalent in our society today. The Child Protection Agency and the Ministry of Social Protection should pursue legal action against the mother’s partial neglect, in the best interest of proper parenting.
