Dear Editor,
It is interesting that Abel Seetaram of Region 5 Council should acclaim ‘sugar workers’ as heroes. One quite understands that, as stated at the beginning of his letter to Kaieteur News of October 27, 2016, he is once more sharing ‘sentiments’, which could be interpreted to mean ‘hardly facts’ nor even ‘informed opinions’. An initial sentimental reaction must be in the form of a question: ‘are any other workers in Guyana heroes?’ Many, including the representative Unions, will argue strongly that their workers are certainly heroes.
Where then do they follow through in the cases of those organisations who may not necessarily be in a state comparable to Guysuco’s, but who are certainly not thriving economically? What should they demand of their defaulting management teams, since culpability for under-performance, (according to Mr. Seetaram), must lie solely with them (and deserving of punitive action) particularly since, unlike Guysuco, those organisations are not plagued with strikes, nor buffeted by the weather. In pursuit of the author’s logic therefore, the management of those un-targeted organisations should be deemed more accountable than that of the ‘sugar heroes’. In this regard it might not be a bad thing if Mr. Seetaram does some introspection, so that when his Region 5 Council fails to achieve targets, because of any heroics by its employees, the former will accept full responsibility for under-performance and the consequences applicable thereto.
