Oct 31, 2016 Letters
Dear Editor;
Permit me some space in your letters section to express my grievances with police ranks of the Central New Amsterdam Police Station. On Thursday October 27, 2016 I was proceeding from New Amsterdam to Corentyne in my car HC 671 with two customers in the back seat and my wife in the front.
A jeep load of police officers attached to the aforementioned station drove up to me and asked that I pull into the corner. I did so. They told me that they had received a report about guns and ammunition in my car. They searched my passengers, one being a security guard and a man who just came from church carrying his guitar. The officers searched the lunch bag of the guard and the other gentleman’s guitar for guns and ammunition.
This harassment has occurred on two previous occasions, the last being on August 31, 2016 whereby ranks pulled up alongside me causing damage to the left side of my vehicle. I told the ranks that I will inform their superiors including government ministers of their behaviour. This made them angry to the point one of them held me forcing me to go to the station. At that time I was looking for the Commander’s number. I did not find the number so I complied and agreed to be taken to the station where the ranks carried out further checks on the vehicle. I eventually got hold of the Commander’s number. He told me to report to him the following day.
Upon reaching the station, I was made to speak to his secretary who relayed to me his advice; which was to speak with the traffic chief. I did so and the traffic chief asked me if any of the ranks in the vehicle were traffic ranks, I told him no. He then said that the matter does not concern him and advised I speak to the Crime Chief. I followed the advice and was asked by the acting Crime Chief if any of the ranks were in civilian clothes, I said no. He then told me to speak to another officer.
Eventually I was advised to file a formal complaint. Mr. Editor, I am tired of the continuous harassment being meted out to me by ranks of this station and it seems as though there is no where to turn to get justice so that I can be left alone. I am asking that the powers that be please look into this issue. I am willing to identify the ranks, particularly the officer who forcibly took me to the station.
