After a £1M project to refurbish Brixton’s Electric Avenue, England, Guyanese-born artiste Eddy Grant is slated to switch on the new illuminated sign marking the completion of the project.
The Avenue got its name as it was the first street in the United Kingdom to be illuminated by electric light. The street gained further prominence internationally by virtue of the Grant’s hit single titled after the street’s name.
To commemorate the event, there will be celebrations on the street during the day and Grant will be asked to switch on the lights in the afternoon to close celebrations.
After the switch is turned on, the superstar will facilitate an exclusive question and answer segment to be hosted by author of “Bass Culture, Sounds like London”, Lloyd Bradley. Also there will be a VIP album listening party, offering persons the first chance to listen to brand new material from his up and coming album “Plaisance” to be release in 2017, on his own Ice Records. The album release is expected to be held at the nearby Prince of Wales pub in Brixton.
Grant, born in Guyana in 1948, grew up in the East Coast Demerara village of Plaisance. In 1960, along with his family, Grant immigrated to England to reside in the Kentish Town Area of London. He attended Acland Burghley Secondary Modern in Tufnell Park. During the late 1950s he was exposed to the UK’s pop music scene and the American rock ‘n’ roll of Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Elvis Presley.
Grant relocated to Barbados in 1981 and released “Living at Notting Hill”. This lead to the singer in October 1982 gaining his first UK number one solo smash “I don’t wanna dance”. This was 14 years after his hit “Baby Come Back”.
Over his 50-year career he has released 15 albums and had five UK Top 10 hits. He is the founding member of the British 1960s pop group “The Equals” who successfully garnered three UK Top 10 singles including the UK #1 “Baby Come Back” in 1968.
Grant has had a number one single in five countries including the UK. His hits include “Do you feel my love” “Walking on Sunshine”, “Message Man” and “Gimme hope Jo’Anna”. The versatile artiste has played every instrument on his records and is still making music with a singular creative vision.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
