Dear Editor,
Firstly, thank you for permitting me the space to air my opinions. As a youth of and in Guyana, it is very hard these days for persons my age, to find a forum outside of social media to air our concerns. Allow me to point out, in my opinion, the Minister within the Ministry of Communities, Valerie Patterson seems to be making an effort in alleviating the housing situation on the East Bank of Demerara but there are still is a weakness in her Ministry’s proposition. The idea of condos presents several problems, the major one being that persons will no longer be land owners.
Persons will be made tenants instead of land owners. If someone needs a loan to study or start a business what will they use as collateral? Will they present their agreement of tenancy to the loan officer? Furthermore, what are the designs or proposed monthly rates of these condos? Let’s not even talk about the fact that persons from different back grounds and ways of upbringing will have to share space. Conflicts will definitely arise – forgive me for being negative but it is the reality of life – people have disagreements daily. A house and a place to live should not be so difficult to come by in such a large country. How are the youth of this country to feel secure and cared for when the basic necessity of shelter seems to be such a bleak reality?
