Veteran Singer Aaron “DE Liberator” Blackman is calling for support in maintaining the Calypsonian Culture. Calypso music is characterized by high rhythm and harmonic vocals. The President of the Guyana Calypso Association, Aaron Blackman seeks to restore the way how calypso used to be all year round, not just how it is carried out today only around mashramani time.
He is asking for youths around the country to become involved in calypso. Because calypso is not just about gyrating and moving up your waist, it talks about things that affect persons in everyday life; it talks about love and sports and culture.
Calypso helps to contribute in promoting cultural tourism and sports, social cohesion and education. He believes that the time has come for Guyanese to showcase their talent in calypso by having a Band whose calypso music can then be recorded and be promoted on the air, whether it is on television or on the radio.
He also believes that calypso can influence persons in bettering their lives, if the Calypsonians are to rise above their present state; they need the public’s full support on a marketable level.
Every year there is a Calypso competition within the Mashramani celebrations, that includes both junior and senior calypsonians whose lyrics are focused on social, economical, cultural and spiritual commentary. However, after the competition is over there aren’t much calypso activities until the next batch of competitors comes on board the next year.
The 62 year old believes that calypso can be revived with the support of the public and sponsors. He believes that calypso can help make Guyana even more unified. And hopes that Mashramani 2017 Calypso Festival would be the essence of what calypsonians can produce.
