Dear Editor,
I have long thought of returning home to spend out my years in the land of my birth. I confess that I would never have moved back once the PPP was in power. My wife and I left Guyana in the seventies because anyone could have seen that the falling economy was about to bring disaster. I am prepared to come back to Guyana because I personally like our President. But I don’t like what I see and I want President Granger to be more insightful.
My concern with Mr. Granger’s Government is his appointments. I live in California and saw the emergence of Silicone Valley. Make no mistake what people tell you; Silicone Valley was a public/private partnership. If it wasn’t for the US Government there would be no Silicone Valley. I learnt one thing living in the United States. Its government sees talent as the key to American’s domination. Once you are highly educated, there will be an invitation to work. The US is not afraid of employing brains of other countries even in sensitive security areas because it feels it can protect itself from spying.
I go on the internet, read about Guyana and I am disappointed at what I see happening in an area of concern. I am not moved to denounce corruption because I believe such claims are exaggerated and Mr. Granger will not tolerate corruption in his administration. I am frustrated by the lack of appreciation of talent by the new government. It is worrying me. I don’t understand it. I have to say it has confounded me.
Why is there no use for Mark Benschop? I thought I would read that Benschop was placed in the Procurement Commission or the Local Government Commission. Politicians may not like his radicalism but there is a new dispensation in Guyana where Benschop’s independent mind will be useful in avoiding the temptation of corruption.
In this new dispensation I see there is no place for Mr. Christopher Ram. I am retired so over the years I spent a lot of time reading news. I still do. Each day when the PPP was in power, as I go through the online editions of Kaieteur News, I would read of the courageous acts of Mr. Christopher Ram and the sharp thinking of Mr. Anand Golsarran. I saw the other day, a fellow with the government lambasting Mr. Goolsarran. This is where I am disappointed with my country. Doesn’t the new government need the talent of these two gentlemen and to think that Mr. Ram is a top class lawyer.
The disappointment that had made me angry is Freddie KIssoon. If I get a chance to meet with President Granger in California or on one of my trips to Guyana, I would ask him why Freddie Kissoon is not advising his government or teaching at UG. Ask any Guyanese in the diaspora when they talk about their homeland and politics, Freddie Kissoon’s name comes up. I believe if Kissoon was to come to the US and address Guyanese on politics in Guyana he would get the largest turnout ever seen Mr. Kissoon has a brilliant mind, is well read in one of the finest subjects in knowledge – philosophy – and has a non-corruptible character. I could not have envisaged that he would not have been back at UG. Don’t the young students need to have someone like that lecture to them?
The new government has not asked these people to serve. Maybe there is an explanation but how do the Guyanese people see those diplomatic appointments. Most of them are not inspiring. I have nothing personal against Mr. Hamilton Green, I met him once in the seventies and his approach was admirable. But why appoint him as Chairman of the Central Housing and Planning Authority? Aren’t there any young engineers at UG that could have filled that role?
I don’t want to make this letter too long and this is my first venture into letter writing and I suspect it will be my last, though one should never say never. I don’t want to become embroiled in any controversy so I will not use my real name. Guyanese can be nasty when you don’t agree with them. The names I mentioned here I don’t know at all; never met or talked to anyone of them though I confess I am a great admirer of Freddie Kissoon. My appeal to Mr. Granger is to use all available talent for the future of Guyana.
