A 15,414 square feet building plan is currently in the process of being completed for dispatch to the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) for approval.
Once approved, construction work will begin on the South Georgetown Civic Centre (SGCC), which will be located at Orealla Street, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
The SGCC which is expected to be completed by June or July 2017 will be a model institution in every sense. It will have the capacity to dispense educational and recreational activities, social cohesion, vocational and skills training, community policing and development, community environmental maintenance to name a few.
Funding for this project is anticipated to be provided by the Government of Guyana, Community Groups, Stakeholders, Corporate Guyana, the M&CC and residents.
The SGCC was conceptualized by Dr. Bertrand Stuart back in February, when he contested as an individual candidate at the recently held Local Government Elections – Constituency 14 (South Ruimveldt and Roxanne Burnham Gardens).
This was the focal point of his campaign based on the fact that although the Community Group was in existence for almost 20 years; it had no permanent venue to hold its meetings and social events.
Secondly, the Ministry of Finance as well as the department of the Presidential Advisor for Youth Empowerment had pledged to fund the rehabilitation of two major playfields in South Ruimveldt Gardens. It was then the community proposed to have the SGCC built on the larger part of the grounds which is 3.78 acres.
Stuart told Kaieteur News that the construction works will be done in five phases, and added that the first phase – the foundation – is scheduled to commence in December.
Once completed, it will serve the communities of East, West, North and South Ruimveldt; Roxanne Burnham Gardens; Tucville, East, West and North East La Penitence; Meadow Brook Gardens; Guyhoc Park and also Guyhoc Gardens as well as surrounding areas.
“The two floors each have an active area of 7,707 square feet. The ground floor will contain a lobby, reception area, recreation hall, kitchen, bar, storage facility, security station, male and female washrooms. The first floor will contain three classrooms, a conference hall, administrative office, VIP pavilion, lobby, reception area and male and female washrooms”, an official explained.
The Centre will also have a basketball court and a ground for cricket and football. Lightings for these facilities will be provided by solar panels. The philosophy and purpose of the Civic Centre is to foster social cohesion and interaction to help combat crime, promote moral attitudes, education and pride among youths, and provide a place for relaxation, exercise and entertainment for residents and to promote a clean and safe environment.
