Shawn Robinson, 24, of D15 Guyhoc Park was struck down by Police Officers on patrol
on Friday last around 17:00 hrs.
Robinson who works at the Courtney Benn Construction Site was returning home from work when a police van struck him off of the motorcycle he was riding.
He told Kaieteur News that he was riding west along Samaan Street, Guyhoc Park, when the van came around the corner at a fast rate.
In severe pain, Robinson explained, “I now coming home from work. Same time di police dem was coming round di corner. I going round di turn and the police dem pull pun me in me lane, so I just ride pun di parapet but di van fly off di road and knock me off me bike.”
An eye witness stated that the policemen attempted to flee the scene but were confronted by the neighbours in the community as they encircled them. “They were about to leave and they were saying that (Robinson) probably don’t even have his papers. That was their excuse. So we surround them and argued with them to pick him up.”
After quite some time, the police eventually helped Robinson up, placed him in the van and took him along with his aunt to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was admitted.
Robinson suffered multiple fractures about his body. He sustained broken bones in his right leg and abrasions to his right and left arm.
Carmen Robinson, the mother of the victim, told Kaieteur News that her son has been bed ridden since the accident occurred.
“It is uncomfortable for my son to be in such a condition. He can’t bathe, use the washroom, nothing. All he does is lie in bed and this is what is going to be happening for a while which means my son can’t work. As a parent, I want the world to know what these police in Guyana doing to innocent children.”
Another witness also stated that police were seen violently attacking another innocent individual some time back in the same community. They said that the police “stomped” the individual off of his motor cycle in order to get him to stop.
The members of this community are quite upset with the behaviour of some of the Officers in the Guyana Police Force, and are urging that measures be put in place to address the appalling conduct of the police force.
Acting Divisional Commander Marlon Chapman said that he was unaware of the incident.
