A man, who police are alleging took an illegal firearm out of a barrel and handed it to them, was yesterday remanded to prison, after he made an appearance before Magistrate Judy Latchman, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Deoraj Singh, 27, of Lot 97 Samatta Point, Grove, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on September 18, last, at Black Water Landing, he had a .32 revolver in his possession, without being the holder of a firearm licence enforced at the time.
It was also alleged that on the same day, at Black Water Landing, Singh had a dozen .32 live ammunition in his possession, when he was not the holder of a firearm license.
Singh, who was represented by Attorney Adrian Thompson, also denied this allegation.
Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt told the court that a party of police went to the home of the defendant on the day in question. According to the prosecutor, on arrival of the police, Singh led lawmen to his bedroom and retrieved the firearm from a barrel and handed it over.
However, Attorney Thompson told the court a different story.
Thompson said that police ranks swooped down on a supermarket owned by his client’s father and conducted a search. The lawyer added that the firearm was allegedly found in the supermarket and police arrested Singh because he was in control of business for that day.
Prosecutor Hunt objected to bail on the ground that no special reasons were given to satisfy the court. Hunt said that after giving police the gun, Singh told ranks that he uses it to protect himself and not for robberies.
In response to the prosecutor’s contention, Thompson requested that his client be granted bail based on the fact that the firearm could have been the property of anyone since the supermarket is opened to the public. The attorney also pointed out that the gun was not found in his client’s possession.
In addition, Thompson stated that the defendant will not be afforded a trial within a reasonable time because the court in which the matter has to be transferred to, sits every three months.
Nevertheless, Magistrate Latchman remanded the defendant to prison and instructed him to return to court on September 26, before the Chief Magistrate for assignment.
