What residents of Grant Sand Road in Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, are calling negligence on the part of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), has now resulted in thousands of dollars in losses following a freak flood on Thursday last.
The Chairman of the NDC is stating otherwise, denying that his council has been negligent.
One resident, Mrs. Johnson (only name given), told this publication that the Soesdyke/Te Huis Coverden NDC is turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to residents’ request to have the drains in the area cleaned and cleared.
She added that drain located west of her premises has not being cleaned in a while. Efforts to get the council to initiate works have all proven futile. The woman said, yesterday, that all of her furniture and stocks were damaged in the flood causing her to seek refuge at a neighbour’s house.
When Kaieteur News visited the area at around 10am, yesterday, the water had already begun to recede.
Another resident, Jimmy Sukhoo, registered similar complaints. He said that the NDC is “dilly-dallying” on the works which it has been mandated to carry out.
He accused the Council of “sitting down on some $2M” and not doing anything to address the residents’ plight.
Another resident who requested anonymity said that the NDC is playing “political games”. He added that the area has a People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Councillor and an A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) Councillor who only “take care of their own people”.
The Chairman, Dinesh Singh is convinced that the issues being faced by the residents are self-inflicted. He added that despite this, an assessment was carried out and the Council will be taking measures to remedy the situation.
Singh explained that the amount of rainfall experienced on Thursday was more that what was ever experienced in the area for the past 25 years.
The Chairman said that works are being carried out. He admitted that while the area does not have a 100 percent drainage capacity, residents must cooperate to keep their drains clean.
Asked if there are facilities in place for residents to dispose of their garbage, the Chairman responded in the affirmative, adding that residents do not want to pay for the garbage disposal services.
He said that persons would rather throw refuse in the drains than be part of the programme.
Meanwhile, a load of sand that was dumped on the road for construction purposes had begun to wash away and has completely blocked off one of the main drains.
The building under construction, residents say, belongs to Singh. They stated that Singh as the Chairman of the NDC should know better than to have his sand blocking off the drain.
Singh, in response, said that the building does not belong to him.
