A friend of Heeranand Boodhram, the alleged drunk driver who reportedly killed four-year-old, Ambeka Providence, and injured her mother, on Sheriff Street Saturday night says his friend is not to be blamed for the accident.
His friend’s vehicle crashed into a car.
Anthony McKenzie, called ‘Cake Soap’ in an interview Kaieteur News yesterday, said that he was seated in the front passenger seat of his friend’s white Toyota Tacoma PRR 3500, when the motorcar transporting Providence of Lot 133 D’Andrade Street, Newton, and her mother Abiola Trotman, drove into their path.
“I see a car jump out Royal Castle parking lot and tried to jump over Garnett Street”, McKenzie recalled.
And contrary to reports, Sunil Boodhram, the father of the driver, stated that his son is 21 years old and not 19. According to the older Boodhram, his son resides with him at First Street Sachi Bazaar, Prashad Nagar, Georgetown.
Police in a statement had said, “In addition to an investigation into the accident, police plan to direct attention to the issue of how a teenager obtained a license for a van.”
The friend said that at the time of the accident he and Boodhram were returning home after visiting a friend on Mandela Avenue. He recounted that as they approached the junction at Sheriff and Garnett Streets, they were given the green light to continue proceeding north. It was then, he stated, the car that was heading east along Garnett Street collided with their vehicle.
He stated that he noticed Providence was seated in the front passenger seat not wearing seatbelt. But previous reports indicated that the four-year old was in the back seat of the car with her mother and Cheryl Williams, a relative.
McKenzie alleged that he and his friend were beaten and robbed of gold jewellery by persons at the scene.
However, eyewitnesses told this publication that the driver of the Toyota Tacoma got out of his vehicle and attempted to remove his number plate. This, they said, angered citizens who began beating the young man. The driver reportedly sought refuge in his vehicle, locking the doors.
It was reported that his relatives arrived within minutes and someone allegedly brandished a gun to clear the way for the driver to be escorted into another vehicle.
According to reports, Providence, her mother and the relative were returning home by car after visiting the Giftland Mall when tragedy struck. It was reported that the accident occurred around 22:00hrs when an allegedly drunk driver rammed his SUV into a car on Sheriff Street.
Providence died on the spot.
Based on reports, Providence and her family were in the back seat of vehicle PMM 1426, which was proceeding south along Sheriff Street. The driver then stopped at the Sheriff and Garnett Street junction. It was in this moment that the Toyota Tacoma, heading north on Sheriff Street, struck the side of the car. The four-year-old girl was flung through the window of the vehicle and onto the roadway. Her mother was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after sustaining injuries to her head and face.
Boodhram remains hospitalized.
