The ongoing trials being conducted by the National Sports Commission (NSC) in collaboration with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) aimed at selecting a squad for the imminent Inter Guiana Goodwill Games next month
against old rivals Suriname is set to continue this weekend at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Tarmac.
On Saturday last, the said venue hosted trials which saw a handful of players turning up to stake a claim for a spot on the squad. Some of those players turning up were part of the Guyana National Under-17 team which competed in the USVI recently and can very well form the core of the squad given their abilities and zeal to play.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Local Seon Erskine who is also an NSC Officer stated that a total of seven (7) disciplines would be competed between the two nations who have had healthy rivalry over the years at this level.
”We would be taking on each other in futsal, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, swimming and athletics from October 21st to 23rd at this same venue.”
Erskine noted that the NSC would be pulling out all the stops to ensure that, in association with the respective national federations/associations, the best teams are selected to represent Guyana against the very competitive, Surinamese.
The national federations/associations would be required to shoulder full responsibility in preparing their teams while the NSC would be taking over full responsibility for encampment of the teams and game officials from October 14, next.
Erskine noted that this is a very important move to ensure that the players are able to gel together as a collective. He posited that this should not only be done when a team is travelling overseas but is equally important when playing at home also.
Futsal trials will be held for all areas this Saturday and Sunday; players would be under the watchful eyes of Coaches Ian D’Vieira and Challus McKinnon. In an invited comment, McKinnon informed that in short-listing a squad, they would be looking at the technique of the players, their intelligence level in this format of the game, their personality and composure among other attributes.
Players who are born in 1997 and after are welcome to attend this weekend’s trials at the Tarmac of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall from 10:00hrs.
