Only recently the Guyana Police Force (GPF) announced its intention of revisiting a number of cold cases
which had been on the back burner for quite some time —One such case is the 2013 killing of Delon Melville.
The partly decomposed body of 26-year-old Delon Melville, a Mocha East Bank Demerara (EBD) resident, was discovered in a clump of bushes, a short distance from his home, four days after he had gone missing.
It is believed that the killing was one of a vigilante nature. No one has ever been arrested for the Melville’s murder.
Recently, this newspaper learnt that ranks from the force’s Major Crimes Unit will be reviewing the case in an effort to eliminate it from the list of unsolved murders.
Will the relatives of Delon Melville finally get closure?
When this newspaper reached out to Paulette Vickerie, the mother of the young man, she was not in a position to speak. She said that she has not yet recovered from the death of her son but hopes to get closure on this matter.
She explained that her daughter and sister are directly connected to the case and are working with the police to bring closure.
Meanwhile, this newspaper understands that Melville was not accepted by everyone in the community of Mocha because he was reportedly homosexual and this type of behaviour was not acceptable in Mocha. As a result of this, the 26-year was taunted by residents.
According to relatives, Melville disappeared after leaving his home because he received a mysterious telephone call.
He had been last seen entering a motor vehicle several blocks from his home, clad in a brown shirt, denim pants, brown cap and a pair of slippers.
Back in 2013, Vickerie said that she had spoken to her son on the night that he vanished.
”At around seven o’clock on Monday, I told Delon that I wanted to watch the news so I turn on the television and was watching. My son said that he was going on the road to get some DVDs to watch with his nephew…And I fell asleep.”
Vickerie said that it was not until the following day that she realized that something was amiss.
”The following day (Tuesday) after I woke up to do my regular devotion, around 4 am, I notice that Delon was not in his bed. I told my daughter that I was worried, but she said to me ‘Mommy, Delon will come home and I will call’, so I left for work.”
The woman said that her grandson subsequently related that whilst watching television his uncle received a phone call at eight o’clock and left immediately.
He was not seen or heard from since then until his body was discovered.
