Statistician Charwayne Walker notes that Guyanese basketball fans were thrilled by the skills displayed by Suriname’s basketball club champions Caribbean Little Devils during their 1978 (March) tour of Guyana.
The Surinamese line up included five national players: Reggie Chelius, Joseph Chelius, Marcel Henar, Victor Sibilo and Roy Eudoxie.
Guyana, who were led by the legendary Mike Brusche and coached by Cuban, George Nelson and Guyanese icon Hewley Henry, won game one 84 to 75 at the National Sports Hall. Merton Fitzalbert top scored with 19 pts, Aubrey Chalmers 13 pts, Compton ‘Lofty’ Hinds 12 pts, Phillip Daniels 10 pts.
For Caribbean Little Devils: Ronald Wezer had a game high 20 pts, Reggie Chelius 13 pts, John Chelius 10pts.
In Game Two, played at the National Sports Hall, Caribbean Little Devils levelled the series with a blowout 96 to 67 points victory.
Victor Sibilo led all scorers with 22 pts, Marcel Henar 19 pts, Roy Eudoxie 17 pts, John Chelius 15 pts.
For Guyana: Compton Hinds top scored with 15 pts, Orin Cumberbatch 12 pts, Merton Fitzalbert 8 pts.
Guyana clinched series Game Three played at the National Sports Hall. The Guyanese won 71 to 63.
Merton Fitzalbert scored a game high 20 pts, Aubrey Chalmers 18 pts, Hewley Harry 10 pts, Orin Cumberbatch 10 pts.
For Caribbean Little Devils, Marcel Henar 15 pts, Reggie Chelius 13 pts, Roy Eudoxie 12 pts, John Chelius 10 pts.
