A family outing came to a horrific end at around 22.00 hrs on Saturday, when an allegedly drunk 19-year-old rammed a van into a car on Sheriff Street, killing a four year old girl and injuring her mother.
Ambeka Providence, of Lot 133 Dandrade Street, Newtown, Kitty, sustained multiple injuries and perished on the spot. Her mother, Abiola Trotman, 23, has been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where she underwent a CT scan.
The driver of the car the child was in escaped unhurt and is currently in police custody.
Angry citizens assaulted the teen who was driving the van. Police said that a breathalyser test revealed that he had consumed above the legal limit of alcohol.
The child’s grandmother said that she was with Ambeka and her mother, who were returning home by car after visiting the Giftland Mall.
The child, her mother and Cheryl Williams, another relative, were in the back seat of the vehicle, PMM 1426, which was proceeding south along Sheriff Street. The driver then stopped at the Sheriff and Garnett Street junction. It was in that moment that a White Toyota Tacoma bearing licence plate PRR 3500, and heading north on Sheriff Street, struck the left side of the car.
Four-year-old Ambeka was flung through the window onto the roadway and perished on the spot. Her mother sustained injuries to her head and face. She was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital and admitted along with Cheryl Williams, the relative.
Relatives of the child’s mother said that she was scheduled to undergo a CT-Scan to ascertain how severe her head injuries are. The family is still in a state of disbelief over the four-year-old girl’s death.
At the scene of the accident, onlookers said that the driver of the SUV and two other young men in his company appeared to be intoxicated. They said that the driver got out of his vehicle and attempted to remove his licence plate.
This angered some citizens who began beating the young man. Eventually the driver managed to seek refuge in his vehicle and lock the doors. He apparently called his relatives who showed up within minutes. It was reported that someone drew a gun in order to clear the way for the driver to be escorted into another vehicle.
Eyewitnesses also reported that associates of the driver jumped into the back of the Toyota Tacoma and removed alcoholic beverages from ice bags and packed them into another vehicle. They then left the scene.
According to the police the 19 year old was admitted to the Woodlands Hospital. Police have confirmed that he was tested and found to be above the legal alcohol limit.
“In addition to an investigating into the accident, police plan to direct special attention to the issue of how a teenager obtained a license for a van,” a release said.
