Lennox Blackmore Nat. Intermediate Boxing Championships…
The raging battles of yore which pitted the skills of boxers from the Republican Boxing Gym (REP) and their Guyana Defense Force counterparts will resume when the curtains go up on the Lennox Blackmore National Intermediate Boxing Championships under the auspices of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), at the National Gymnasium Mandela Avenue tonight.
Boxing historians would remember those days when the Republican boxers were most feared and dominated the scene. Those fans will also remember that the GDF had licked its wound and rebounded with decisive victories and has once again retained the title as champions in last year’s tournament.
However, of recent, Republican boxers have shown vast improvement and the soldiers are now required to dig deep to overcome their nemesis. This was evident in subsequent tournaments when the Republicans turned in a wonderful display to walk off with the spoils including the 2014 edition of this tournament at the M&CC Municipal Centre, East Ruimveldt.
This did not go down well with the soldiers and they were anxiously awaiting an opportunity to repair the damage. This opportunity will be presented over the next three nights when the best of the best enters the square jungle to establish their dominance.
One cannot forget the decisive nature of Mickle Sancho’s (GDF) demolition of Lawrence Lewis (REP) where the soldier unleashed a wicked two fisted assault on his man that had him covering up and forced the referee to institute a mandatory 8 count and eventually wave the bout off at 2:18secs into the 2nd round.
The GDF then enforced its dominance when Colin Lewis dished out a two fisted attack that forced the referee to halt his bout against Kurt Kendall (REP) at 1:04secs of the second round to upkeep the tempo. Another bout between light/heavyweights, Lawrence Lewis (REP) and Mickle Sancho (GDF) ended 2:18secs into the 2nd round after the soldier unleashed a wicked two fisted assault on his man that had him covering up and forced the referee to institute a mandatory 8 count and eventually wave the bout off.
The Republicans were to bounce back and dished out their share of leathers and had eventually prevailed as the overall champions. The GDF boxers were disappointed then and they are still fuming which means that the war will continue over the next three nights and the soldiers will not rest until the championship is back in their camp.
This might be more easily said than done since the Republicans have improved immensely and will be out to prove that the 2014 feat was no fluke. Even amidst the bitterness between the two top gyms one cannot simply discard the other institutions.
The Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) has been anything but forgotten thanks to the efforts of such stalwarts as lightweight, Diwani Lampkin. A skillful boxer, Lampkin has also demonstrated a propensity to fight close up thus surprising his opponents.
On the inaugural night of last year’s championships he was required to fight twice and he came through successfully on both occasions. He compiled a better array of combinations from the onset while his crisp right crosses were a joy to behold as he used them to keep his man at bay and come out victorious.
Then there is Orin Bancroft, another product of the FYF. He did not do so well in last year’s tournament but his skill should be able to stand out providing he could attain the requisite condition. He lost out to Quincy Boyce (GDF) last year but there was nothing to be ashamed about since the latter fighter is made of quality stuff and ought not to be underrated. He also will be on show over the next three nights.
Otherwise, fans could look forward to keen contests from boxers of the Essequibo Gym, Young Achievers, Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym, Rosehall Jammers and Caryll’s Gym among others. The first bell rings at 20:00hrs tonight.
